Lucky's Southern Grill - James Island, SC

One of the things I am liking most about the practice right now is that we can offer different levels of service to different clients and avoid falling into a pigeonhole about what we do in terms of restaurant design. Its nice to have a range from King St. fine dining to affordable neighborhood favorite.

Lucky's is the first solo-venture of my friend John Davis and his wife Kimberly. The time line was very tight and the budget limited for the conversion of a defunct Applebee's into a comfortable southern dining room and bar. David Thompson Architect served a limited function as a design consultant offering advice more than anything; colors, fixtures, finishes, etc.

FIG - Version 2.0

It is a challenge to renovate a space that most people already love. This was the case with FIG but after 8 years, it was time for a face lift. Our goal was to enhance what was great about FIG rather than dramatically change it - we wanted to offer a more sophisticated version of what everyone had become used to. Re-opening Monday, come check out new wood floors, wall finishes, bathrooms, bar finishes, wall sconces and custom leather booths and banquette.

The Grocery is starting to fill out. We recently made some modifications to the bar. Mirrors from Bob Hines should install this week and a tryptic painting for the private dining room is in process. We had a great meal on Friday night and the place was packed. Congratulations to Kevin and Susan.

FIG - renovation

We are halfway through a marathon renovation of FIG. Starting Sunday David Willis and his crew from Southeastern Construction began work in the kitchen, bar, dining room and restrooms. Potentially by the weekend, diners will see new floors and wall finishes, some minor changes in the bar and dining room and all new bathrooms. We also changed out the old storefront entrance which should be much easier for staff and patrons alike.

Star's Restaurant has BAR and Zoning approvals

Star's is a contemporary take on Art Deco inspired fine dining. This is a large project including a grand dining room and bar, lounge area, exhibition kitchen and banquet room. The Ownership team includes Keith Jones of Amen St and chef Brett McKee. The schedule is rapid with opening projected in early 2012.

If we take David Chang at his word that when he opened his first place that the goal was not authenticity nor originality but simply to put out "tasty and delicious food" - that he wasn't setting out to win awards, accolades and open a small restaurant empire that would change the way we think about restaurants - then that is the model for my practice.

My goal is not to be ground breakingly original or experimental nor to stridently be authentic in regional architectural traditions but to put out simply "tasty" architecture - to make small changes to peoples lives and make them smile a little. From such a modest goal can come something amazing through small, cumulative interventions into our built environment.

Last week I had the pleasure of traveling to Nashville to work with Jerry Brown, Louis and Marlene Osteen. HDG is relocating their restaurant Fish & Co. to the 12 South district. The total move and renovation will take seven days. I spent 48 hours as a hands on design consultant and have continued to correspond by phone and e-mail this week while work is underway.

It is an interesting situation to transform a barbecue place into a casual fine dining establishment in a week, especially when you are working from arms length - so I am hoping for the best. I really appreciate the opportunity.

The Fanning Residence has been issued a Building Permit with construction to begin asap. Matt O'Hara is the contractor and I am very excited to see this project proceed.

The scope includes the conversion of a car port into a sun room and office, the design of a new pantry and casework and front porch. A screened porch and shed have been designed as a second phase.

I am working in a loose role for the design of a new restaurant called The Rice Market at teh old Boathouse location on Eastbay St. I developed the plan and exterior renovations last year while still with GTG and it is finally under construction.
